CYMRAEG:
Mae Burum yn rhyddhau ei pedwerydd albwm o'r enw 'Eneidiau' ym mis Gorffennaf 2022. Rhyddheir 'Eneidiau' iw lawrlwytho ac ar 'finyl' yn unig ar y label Recordiau Bopa ac yn ddigidol drwy wasanaeth Pyst. Dyma'r tro cynta' i Burum ryddhau albym ar feinyl, ac fel 'anoraks' jazz mae'r ffurf yma yn gweddi i'r dim i'r gerddoriaeth. Mae Burum yn parhau â'i harfer o gyflwyno trefniannau jazz newydd o hen alawon gwerin Cymraeg, ond mae'r albym yma yn ddatblygiad ddeublyg wrth i'r cerddor dawnus Patrick Rimes ymuno ar y pibau ac wrth i sŵn y band gymryd cam arall ymlaen.

Recordiwyd yr albym yn Giant Wafer Studio, Llanbadarn Fynydd, canolbarth Cymru, ar benwythnos ym mis Medi 2021 wrth i reolau Covid gael ei llacio. Ariannwyd y prosiect gan nawdd 'Covid Kick Starter Fund' a wobrwyd i Burum gan y Genesis Foundation.

Mae'r albym yn gyfraniad arall pwysig i jazz o Gymru, sydd â naws digamsyniol Gymreig. Cawn ddarlleniad egniol o 'Cariad Cywir' sy'n cynnwys unawd ar y sach-bîb – offeryn anghyffredin yn y byd jazz. Ma Suo Gân yn berfformiad grŵp hollol reddfol, sydd ond yn awgrymu'r alaw adnabyddus ac sydd yn dwyn naws cerddoriaeth trosgynol Alice Coltrane a Pharoah Sanders.

Canolbwynt yr albym yw 'Eneidiau' sydd wedi'i ysbrydoli gan ddylanwad celf ffoaduriaid Iddewig ar ddiwylliant Cymru (Heinz Koppel a Joseph Herman). Mae'n cynnwys yr alaw Gymraeg 'Bugeilia'r Gwenith Gwyn', alawon 'Galliard' o Ffrainc a Lloegr ac yna harmoniau Iddewig i gloi. Mae ffliwt Patrick Rimes, sacsoffon Daniel Williams a piano Dave Jones yn dangos sut gall jazz a gwerin gyd-blethu yn naturiol yn y gân hon.
Awn i gyfeiriad gwahanol gyda darlleniad unigryw o 'Pibddawns Dowlais' ar ddechrau ochr B sydd wedi'i ysbrydoli gan 'Stuff' oddi ar albym Miles Davis 'Miles in the Sky' ac i orffen cawn berfformiad epig, hollol byr-fyfyr o'r hen alaw Gymraeg Myn Mair sy'n cynnwys nifer o uchafbwyntiau naturiol o fewn y gerddoriaeth.

Mae dylanwad 'Survivor's Suite' Keith Jarrett a jazz Ewropeaidd Tomas Stanko, y trwmpedwr o Wlad Pwyl i'w glywed wrth wrando a'r 'Eneidiau' a 'Myn Mair'.

Gwelir fideos o 'Suo Gân' a 'Pibddawns Dowlais' ar sianel YouTube Burum ac ar safle 'Recordiau Bopa' ar app AM, sy'n hyrwyddo'r albym.

ENGLISH:
Burum (meaning 'yeast' in Welsh) release their fourth album entitled 'Eneidiau' [Spirits] in July 2022. 'Eneidiau' will be released on vinyl only, in a new venture for Recordiau Bopa, and for download and digitally through the Welsh distribution service Pyst. Burum continue to develop their band 'sound' by interpreting Welsh folk songs and this album is another milestone for Welsh jazz.

Led by Tomos Williams (Khamira, Cwmwl Tystion) on trumpet and Daniel Williams, his brother on tenor sax, Burum are joined for the first time on 'Eneidiau' by Patrick Rimes (Calan, Vri), a young virtuoso multi-instrumentalist who's a real force on the Welsh folk scene. His bag-pipes and various whistles immediately places the band's music in a different world to the usual jazz quintet/sextet. Dave Jones (piano), Aidan Thorne (bass) and Mark O'Connor have been stalwarts of Burum and the Welsh jazz scene for years, and bring their customary musicianship and taste to the recording.

Having been awarded a 'Covid Kickstarter fund' from the Genesis Foundation, Burum went to Giant Wafer Studio, Llanbadarn Fynydd, Mid-Wales for a weekend in early September 2021, as covid rules were slackened to create new music and to record the album.

'Cariad Cywir' ('True Love') a tale of unrequited love, is given an energetic reading, with a distinctive bag-pipe solo that immediately sets the Burum sound apart. The lullaby 'Suo-Gân' (meaning 'lullaby') is a group performance that only hints at the well-known melody and is inspired by the transcendental and meditative music of Alice Coltrane and Pharaoah Sanders that has become popular of late.
The centerpiece of the album is the Suite of melodies 'Eneidiau' (Spirits), inspired by the art of Jewish refugees (Heinz Koppel and Joseph Herman) who fled to Wales during WWII. The Suite consists of the Welsh folk tune 'Bugeilia'r Gwenith Gwyn' (Watching the Wheat), a French/English 'galliard' and some Jewish harmonic colours to finish. Patrick Rimes' flute, Daniel Williams' sax and Dave Jones' piano demonstrate how jazz and folk can intertwine naturally in this performance.

Side B begins in a completely different sound-world with a Miles in the Sky inspired performance of 'Pibddawns Dowlais' (Dowlais Hornpipe). Not your usual performance of a hornpipe! A completely improvised, extended reading of the ancient Welsh melody 'Myn Mair' (Oh Mary) finishes the album.

Keith Jarrett's 'Survivor's Suite' was an influence on Myn Mair and the European Jazz of figures such as Polish trumpeter Tomas Stanko permeats the whole abum.

Vidoes of 'Suo Gân' and 'Pibddawns Dowlais' are available on the Burum YouTube Channel

Burum have been playing together for over 10 years and the empathy and friendships that have developed over this time shines through in the music. Burum are a band, with a distinctive band sound - not a collection of individuals simply playing together. They have previously released 3 CDs (Alawon, 2007, Caniadau, 2012 and Llef, 2016), and have toured India twice, performed at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, France, numerous times as well as at Brecon and Teignmouth Jazz Festivals.

Liner notes:
Fel ein recordiau blaenorol, trefniannau o alawon gwerin a geir ar ‘Eneidiau’. Rhwystredigaeth cariad yw thema ‘Cariad Cyntaf’, tra mai cariad mam at ei baban sy’n cael ei gyfleu yn ‘Suo Gân’. Mae’r trac ‘Eneidiau’ ei hun yn tynnu ar draddodiadau Ffrengig, Seisnig, Cymreig ac Iddewig. Maent yn cyniwair yma o fewn y pair Affro-Americanaidd sydd yn fframwaith i unrhyw berfformiad jazz. Hen alaw o’r Gymru Babyddol yw ‘Myn Mair’. Mae’n weddi dros enaid cyfaill ar awr ei angau ac yn mynd â ni yn ôl i’r unfed ganrif ar bymtheg, o leiaf.

Recordiwyd ‘Eneidiau’ yn 2021. ‘Blwyddyn y pla’ o fath mwy llythrennol na’r hyn a oedd gan yr hanesydd Gwyn A. Williams mewn golwg pan ddefnyddiodd y term i ddisgrifo 1979. Yn wyneb y ‘Na’ digamsyniol yn Refferendwm Datganoli’r flwyddyn honno, a chychwyn ar gyfnod o lywodraethau Toriaidd, nododd fod y Cymry wastad wedi gorfod ‘dawnsio rhwng olwynion hanes’. Fel gweddill yr albwm, mae’r fersiwn o ‘bibddawns’ ei dref enedigol, Dowlais, yn gyfraniad at gynnal y ddawns yn wyneb heriau heddiw. Daniel Williams

-------------------------------

As in our previous albums, ‘Eneidiau’ (Souls) is a collection of new arrangements of folk songs. ‘Cariad Cywir’ is a song of unrequited love, while ‘Suo Gân’ is a lullaby. The title track draws on Welsh, English, French and Jewish sources, here conversing within the African American crucible that forms the base of any jazz performance. ‘Myn Mair’ is a prayer, delivered at the time of death, pleading for the release of a friend’s soul from purgatory. It is an old melody that takes us back to the 16th century or even earlier.

‘Eneidiau’ was recorded in 2021, a ‘plague year’ of a rather more literal kind than what the historian Gwyn A. Williams had in mind when he used the term to describe 1979. In the year that saw Wales give a resounding ‘no’ to the creation of a devolved assembly, and the beginning of over a decade of Tory governments, he noted that the Welsh have always had to ‘dance’ among the ‘giant cogwheels’ of history. The ‘Pibddawns’ (‘hornpipe’), from his native Dowlais, is offered, like the rest of the album, in the hope that the dance will continue for some time yet. - Daniel Williams

about

Burum Cardiff, UK

Burum's repertoire is drawn from Welsh traditional music, adapted and re-imagined for a modern jazz sextet. The band's music fuses a deep respect for the original folk melodies themselves with the flexibility and dynamics of jazz improvisation - beautiful, melancholic melodies are performed alongside fiery solos and deep grooves. ... more
